KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Transport is proposing amendments to the Road Transport Act to enable electric vehicles to be registered in Malaysia, said its Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

He said currently, electric vehicles cannot be registered as they do not have an engine and chasis number, which is required to be furnished when a vehicle is registered with the Road Transport Department.

“Amendments to the Act will be tabled in Cabinet next month,” he told reporters after officiating the New Straits Times-Maybank COTY2U 2010 Motor Carnival here today.

The two-day event is being held in conjunction with the 2010 Car of the Year Award and is organised by the motoring publication of the New Straits Times, “Cars, Bike and Trucks”.
