KUCHING, Nov 6 (Bernama) – A project to clean Sungai Sawarak will be carried out by the federal government, through the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, under the Tenth Malaysia Plan, Sarawak Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said Saturday.

He said that a committee, jointly chaired by him and Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, had been set up to monitor the work progress and control the water quality of the river.

“One of the factors which make Sungai Sarawak dirty is because of the dirty condition of its tributaries, like Sungai Padungan, Sungai Gersik, Sungai Bedil, Sungai Maong, Sungai Kudei and ,” he told reporters after opening the RM960,000 Darul Ibadah Mosque at Kampung Kudei here.

He hoped that the relocation of the Satok Market would make work to clean Sungai Sarawak and its tributaries easier.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari, who is Satok Assemblyman, said his ministry was working with the relevant ministries, agencies and corporations to gather the data of housing applicants in the state.

He said that there was sharp increase in the number of new housing applicants in Sarawak, especially in Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu.

The increase could be due to those in rural areas migrating to the towns, he added.
